The Co-Founder
Bo Bo Noir was co founded by Portuguese designer João Bessa.
Before launching the brand, he founded Bessa Design in 2013, gaining international recognition for its distinctive design language. His work explores the relationship between past and present, drawing from design history and translating it into contemporary forms.
Creating an eyewear brand became a natural extension of that vision. Just as a design piece defines a space, eyewear defines personal identity.
Design Philosophy
Bo Bo Noir draws from classic forms and strong silhouettes.
Many frames reference mid century design, where proportion, structure and clarity were essential. These influences are reinterpreted through a contemporary and minimal lens.
The intention is not to follow trends, but to create eyewear that remains relevant beyond them.
Materials and Production
Bo Bo Noir frames are crafted from high quality acetate, a material valued for its durability, comfort and depth of colour.
Production is carried out in specialised eyewear facilities with extensive industry experience, ensuring consistency and attention to detail in every frame.
Creative direction, brand development and design vision are based in Portugal. This approach allows Bo Bo Noir to preserve a strong design identity while maintaining high standards in production.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The name Bo Bo Noir reflects the dual spirit of the brand.
Bo Bo refers to the court jester — in Portuguese, “bobo da corte” — a figure known not just for humor, but for questioning conventions with intelligence, wit and freedom.
Noir, the French word for black, evokes elegance, mystery and restraint.
Together they represent the balance that defines Bo Bo Noir: bold yet refined.
